Single and Multiple decks in blackjack

blackjack handCasinos have differing policies towards the amount of decks they use on Blackjack tables. An average player is more likely to win with fewer decks for a number of reasons. One reason is that because there are fewer cards of different types, the player is more likely to be dealt the two (or more) different types of cards he needs to achieve a winning hand (e.g. Ten and Ace). Another reason is that in case the player is dealt blackjack, it is much less likely for the dealer to also have blackjack because there are less tens and aces available. Statistically, a single deck game will pay the player more often at a ratio of 3:2.

In a soft 17 game with the following rules: double-after-split, no re-splits, one card to split Aces, no surrender, double on any two cards and original bets only lost on dealer blackjack, the house advantage of using multiple decks works out as follows: if single deck: 0.04%, double decks: 0.42%, four decks: 0.61%, six decks: 0.67% and eight decks: 0.70%. Not only do multiple decks offer the dealer an increasingly more significant advantage the more decks used, they also make card-counting techniques a lot more difficult to use.
